Post-Election Mindfulness

Curiosity is healthy. It’s empowering and very telling. We can learn so much, not just about the other side, but about ourselves. We can get curious about the past, and look back and question why Donald Trump was elected president (I personally believe this act of reflection is necessary and important).

To begin our quest to remain open-minded, we can use our emotions to propel us forward and to motivate us. If we channel our anger, fear, frustration, or confusion into wonder and intrigue, we can redirect what might be holding us back.

The Power of Mindfulness as a Conflict-Resolution Tool

When many people hear the term "mindfulness," they think of things like Buddhism, meditation, being peaceful, taking walks, chewing your food slowly, etc. But mindfulness is more of a general orientation than a specific activity. To be mindful is to adopt a sense of life that says "In all things, I am student first and a teacher second." It is to maintain what Zen philosophers call "Beginner's mind." It is to live with a recognition that creativity and problem-solving becomes infinitely more likely when we listen before we talk, when we look carefully before we judge, when we aim to be present with others before preaching at them...

When is it Right to "Trust the Process"?

Anytime you have a group of people interacting over time, you have a complex adaptive system. You can have clear hierarchies and role requirements, but what you can't easily quantify is how powerful a role emergence will play in how projects and people take shape when they are all co-evolving. (Especially here at the HumanCurrent podcast, where we run a flat organization.) It's beautiful, really. Together people shape the work, and the work changes them.

There are a lot of factors that have agency to cause the changing shape of any system (let's take a project team as our example), but the most obvious medium for making change or progress is ideas. Here's the thing about ideas and how much power they have....
